Of course it is always nice to treat yourself, or go for a romantic dinner in an expensive restaurant with your partner. But sometimes the most delicious food can be found where you least expect it. Street stalls and small cafes at the side of the road often give you a far more authentic experience of traditional Jamaican food then the restaurant in your hotel. This is because it has been cooked the traditional way, with recipes that have been passed down generations. Don’t just take my word for it - go and try some for yourself.
Red stripe chicken is one of the tastiest and most popular dishes around. Recipes vary from place to place, but most common ingredients include onions, bell peppers, vegetable oil and of course a can of red stripe to marinate the chicken.
Jamaica is home to some vegetables that are not common to the rest of the world, these include ackee, which can be made into a yummy dip and is great for vegetarian dishes. And breadfruit which can be oven baked or roasted.
And for desert try a Gizzada, an authentic Jamaican coconut pastry snack.
To be able to sample all the delicious food Jamaica has to offer, we strongly recommend you hire a car for your trip. If you plan to spend a day or two just by the hotel pool, then you could think about a car share scheme whereby a car can be hired for much shorter periods of time. Have a great trip!
